What is CompuCon? CompuCon is a statewide conference that supports the development of PreK-12 Computer Science education for all Kansas students. CompuCom will be bringing the very best computer science teaching resources and support to PreK-12 educators across the state of Kansas.
Who should attend CompuCon? PreK-12 teachers, school districts/administrators; anyone who seeks to know more about improving access to Computer Science learning opportunities for their own students and classrooms.
Why is this important? Earlier this year, the Kansas Board of Education took action to allow Kansas school districts to offer Computer Science education, and for it to count as a core math/science graduation credit. CompuCon provides information about what the next steps for a school should look like.
What will be topics covered? The following key topics of focus will be covered in panel discussions led by industry leaders and education professionals:
1) Educators and Resource Partners –This panel will discuss successful/proven ways to bring CS learning to schools.
2) Professional Development for Educators – This group will discuss options for ANY teacher to get up to speed with teaching CS through a variety of different PD resources.
3) Postsecondary Options – Here you will learn about the necessity for CS in the career paths of our students. We have 2-year and 4-year educational institutions represented here along with tech apprenticeships and bootcamp programs.
4) Business & Industry Needs – This panel brings commerce and industry representatives to the table to discuss current and future hiring trends. We will also hear about private sector engagement with K12 education.
Will there be content outside of the panel discussions? Yes – We have a series of 5-minute Quickpitch presentations that will be presented by resource partners throughout the day. These presentations will give a snapshot view of available resources that bring value to the classroom.
How long is the conference? We have a fantastic agenda planned and we plan to stick to a tight schedule on the day of the event. Doors will open at 8:30am and the conference will run from 9:00am until 3:00pm.
Where is CompuCon being held? CompuCon is being held in Salina KS this year, at the Hilton Garden Inn & Conference Center. We hope that this central location will allow attendees from all corners of the state to participate.
